Psychology Supports
Learning daily living skills to build functional capacity and independence and social skills to improve relationships
Eligibility
NDIS participants who have a Capacity Building: Improved Daily Living budget can use it to purchase psychology supports, provided:
- their plan is flexible (plan‑managed or self‑managed) and does not specifically exclude psychology
- the supports are directly related to their stated plan goals
- If plan goals require updating, an ‘unscheduled’ plan review is recommended.
- the supports are designed to build long-term functional capacity and are not clinical treatment for mental health issues
- meet ‘reasonable and necessary’ criteria
Psychology supports may also be funded under Capacity Building: Improved Relationships (for managing disability-related behaviours that impair participants’ social functioning and their ability to build and maintain positive relationships) and Core Supports categories (in some circumstances).
If in doubt, please contact your Local Area Coordinator (LAC), Support Coordinator (SC), or the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on 1800 800 110.
Please note that I only accept referrals from plan-managed and self-managed participants. Agency-managed participants should seek an NDIS-registered psychologist.
What are psychology supports?
NDIS psychology supports are evidence-based therapeutic interventions provided by a registered psychologist designed to build participants’ disability-related functional capacity, helping participants achieve their plan goals by teaching them practical strategies to improve their daily living skills in the long-term to increase their independence and social participation in areas that are impaired by their psychosocial disability.
Examples
- emotional regulation and stress management (including managing anger and social anxiety)
- social and communication skills (including understanding social cues, assertiveness training, and conflict resolution) for making and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships, increasing community participation, and reducing social isolation
- everyday problem‑solving skills, including decision-making and personal organisation (including time and money management)
- self-care, including improving sleep, exercise, and nutrition routines to build resilience (functional capacity) and motivation
